When I grow up I want to be... John Fairchild

The super eighties style cover.

Looking for inspiration for my thesis, I found the book Chic Savages. It was written by John Fairchild, of Fairchild Publications. He was the heir of the company started by his grandfather, Edmund Fairchild, where he worked since he was 13.

The book is a really funny memoir, telling parts of his life and how he created W magazine out of Women’s Wear Daily. He writes about designers and fashion people in a hilarious (and sometimes inappropriate) way. He has amazing quotes and incredible stories of being around people like Yves Saint Laurent and Bill Blass.

Mr. Fairchild talking to Vogue editor Diana Vreeland.

With YSL.

In 1997, when he was around 70, he retired as chairman and editorial director of Fairchild Publications, which is now owned by Condé Nast. He was a very controversial person in the fashion world, getting into feuds with designers and journalists alike. It is rumored he had a huge fight with my beloved André Leon Talley. Still, it really is a must read. I tried to choose my favorite quotes but there are too many and too good.

Of course, the book is super old... Almost as old as me. But for someone wanting to go into the magazine business is a must-read. It's entertaining and shows how things used to be. And maybe how they should be again. I keep thinking (hipsterly) that maybe fashion should go back to being not so mainstream. I hope I get a magazine job soon. And maybe I could have as much fun as Fairchild did in the eighties.

Good bye, Savannah!

In just a week is my thesis deffense, a week after that is my graduation. And in less than a month I will be back in Mexico. For good. No more Savannah. No more U.S. of A. At least for a while....

I've been living here for over two years now, and I can say it has been a weird/great experience. So I started thinking about the things I'll miss the most about this (creepy, weird, super hot, amazing) place. Here's my list of the best Savannah ahs to offer.

1. Arc. Although it was better when it was all vintage.
2. Foxy Loxy’s iced Americano.
3. My house. Regardless of the Christmas bears in May.

4. Walking everywhere.
5. The bar at The Mansion on Forsyth.
6. Some (just some!) SCAD events.  Like Manolo Blahnik at last year's Fashion Show.

7. The heart of gold salad at The Bean. And their crostini plate. And smoothies.
8. Papillote’s goat cheese pie.

9. My yoga teacher, Kathleen.
10. Dogs everywhere on Forsyth Park. Although there are no dogs in the picture.

11. Going to Kroger on a Sunday (totally kidding, I f-ing hate that).
12. Vintage shopping/thrifting. Almost impossible to do in Mexico.
13. The photobooth at Social Club.
14. Having something to complain about: the heat, the hipsters, homeless people.

And of course, my friends (and cousin/friend/neighbor). I don't know how I could have survived in this city without them.

I'm trying to enjoy my last days here... And really, thank you for everything, Savannah.

What I Want Today: High Waisted Bikinis

I love retro clothes, and I don't really like the sun. Which means... I've been trying a very vintage/retro approach to going to the beach, think hats and huge sunglasses. But with the swimwear options available, it's not easy. Recently I've seen more one-piece swimsuits in magazines (like this one), but what I'm really liking is high-waisted bikins. I think they're super cute and a great alternative to looking different. And not naked.

My mom is coming to Savannah next week (yay!), so I'll try to find one for her to get me... Or maybe I'll look for one on my trip to NYC (I'm so excited about that, too!). Meanwhile, these are my favorites.

My favorite! Perfection ar Anthropologie.

Mismatched at Urban Outfitters.

 Floral at Urban Outfitters.

Psychedelic at ShopBop.

So now you know, you'll never see me at the beach without a hat, huge sunglasses, a maxi dress and SPF 50 because I'm terrified of skin cancer. But with these vintage inspired two-pieces, I could make an exception. And maybe next time I got to the beach I'll take off my dress.

Think Pink!

Yesterday while (still) writing my thesis I came upon the color called "Mexican Pink", 'invented' by Mexican fashion designer from the fifites Ramón Valdiosera. Of course, pink is my favorite color so after this and the "Think Pink" scene in Funny Face, I knew I had to do a post on it.

A still from the Think Pink sequence in Funny Face.

As I told you, last weekend I went to an Audrey Hepburn movie marathon. One of the three movies was Funny Face. In one of the first scenes, Quality magazine editor, Regina George, sings about the color when she decides that the next issue needs to be all pink. Think Pink! has beautiful images (see them for yourself below). And so I decided that she's exactly the kind of editor I want to be some day. Probably without the singing.

And then Refinery29 compared Anna Wintour to Regina George (I always get super excited when I get a reference to something) because she supposedly made all Vogue editors wear pink to the Met Gala, which was yesterday. And, which by the way, was co-hosted by one of my favorites: Carey Mulligan.

Some of Schiaparelli's designs with her signature pink on them.

But back to pink, Schiaparelli Shocking Pink, that is. The reason Wintour (supposedly) made her editors do this is the fact that the gala honors Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada's exhibition: Impossible Conversations. Schiaparelli's favorite color was, drumroll please, pink. Shocking Pink, to be exact. So there you go.

There were some pink moments at last night's gala. This are my favorite. (Besides all the photographers yelling, that was the best part of the live streaming).

Model Coco Rocha with pink hair (I need to try this again), nails, and shoes. The jumpsuit is vintage Givenchy and was worn by Elizabeth Taylor, and bought at an auction.

Emily Blunt (who I've loved ever since The Devil Wears Prada) in Calvin Klein with husband
John Krasinski. And SJP's dress.

Lena Dunham, of the HBO show Girls, wearing beatufil pink shoes. I love that she didn't go pink all the way but had this detail. And so did Mr. Hamish Bowles (Vogue editor-at-large) with the jacket and socks.

Sarah Jessica Parker wearing Valentino with Mr. Valentino.

And my best dressed award has to go to Karlie Kloss in Jason Wu. By now you probably know how much I love him but this dress is just too beautiful for words. It's definitely my favorite.

Please know that I'm now taking donations so that next year I can pay the $25,000 ticket to attend. Meanwhile, think pink!

Happy Birthday Audrey!

Audrey Hepburn’s 83rd birthday is today. That is why Savannah is having a three movie marathon in a real theater this weekend. And I couldn’t be more excited to have a classy-old-movie-weekend because, of course, I love her. Who doesn’t?

The eating part of this still will be easy to replicate.

I will be watching Roman Holiday, Charade and Funny Face. Recently I saw Roman Holiday and I love when she cuts her hair super short. She looks beautiful, and I of course love short hair. Also, I’m planning on replicating the Breakfast at Tiffany’s scene this summer in NYC and get my mom to get me something (maybe I’ll post a pic if it comes out the right way).

I love her whole Roman Holiday look, and I own a similar skirt. But my favorite from this pic is the smile and the hair.

Now I must go and plan what I will wear. Maybe the Roman Holiday look, maybe an LBD (not Givenchy, for sure). You, meanwhile, enjoy some pics from what I will see in a big screen!

Yesterday I wrote about sunglasses, so this still from Charade seems fitting for today's post.

Funny Face: an Audrey movie about fashion. Do I even need to caption this?

What I Want Today: Karen Walker Sunglasses

I'm a really huge fan of sunglasses. It may be due to the fact that I'm too white and I don't want to get wrinkles. So I never leave the house without a pair. I also look better in pictures with them on. And I think they are something very inspirational, you can get a piece of Dolce & Gabbana for $200 and wear them every day.

Recently I discovered Karen Walker sunglasses. Karen Walker is a designer from New Zealand and she designs quirky, colorful frames. Right now I'm very much into round sunglasses, especially oversized ones. And also really thick ones. And Karen Walker has both. I really, really like them. Because, who doesn't love pink and oversized?

The next two pairs are my favorite but you can find more here and here.

Super Duper Strength Sunglasses, $250 at ShopBop.

Harvest Sunglasses, $280 at ShopBop.

While I decide if I get a pair or not, because I'm broke as always, I'll just stay home and wait for the nice UPS man who's bringing me the new Tom Ford shades I got from The Outnet.
